- Prod_Deity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad this doesn't aplpy to the US.
Someone needs to do some more reasearch before posting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tempinbox, you mean warranty?
- entropy357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When will this ACTUALLY be available for purchase? It just seems like the put out a press release about this.
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it should be available in a few months, this event shows that major companies like Dell are not afraid of stitching away from Microsoft. Here is more info from Mandriva's website: http://www.mandriva.com/company/press/pr?n=/pr/corporate/2564
- micromause, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's still a Dell" =P They make such crap! I had/have an old Inspiron and I had to replace the mobo twice on it. Because the headphones jack (made of ***** plastic) got warn out. Also, the LCD had problems and they refused to replace it. Even though I paid for the highest level of the warranty! I spent a little over 3k on it, but I refused to make any more payments due to the massive *****-pile it turned out to be.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow! why is everyone arguing isn't the whole goal of this to screw microsoft?
- cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dupe, here's mine from over a day ago
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Latest_Dell_Laptop_Runs_On_Mandriva_Linux - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WTF is Mandriva?
Didn't Dell invest millions of dollars into RedHat? - saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell screwed me over. Can I sue?
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dell Latitude 110L w/ Mandriva Linux costs about 759euros (~$940 USD)
C|Net has more information: http://news.com.com/Mandriva+Linux+pre-installed+on+Dell+laptop/2110-1044_3-5869094.html - entropy357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When is it ACTUALLY going to be available? I don't see it available on the Dell.com web site anywhere.
- Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First off Dell tech support is one of the worse out there. Their tier one phone jockeys don't know anything more than to read a monitor. If you are lucky and get a tier two tech you might get something accomplished.
Now add into the mix having to trouble shoot linux and how do you see the tech support now?
Dell are good computers for mom and pop that want to get online to read/send email and play Yahoo/MSN games, and not much else, unless you go to their top gaming systems (which aren't that bad actually).
Also it would have been nice to have it said in the story posting that this is in Europe only, probably as a test bed. - themulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let me start off and say, I am no idiot. But I installed ubutnu, and it was okay. Had the essentials, but I'm a Linux novice. I tried to install some apps i had on a 3D world CD. That was a pain, as was the file Dir setup, just confusing. The aim/msn... all in one app was nice. But I couldn't figure out how to get sound card drivers. After all, I just want to use my PC, and spend my whole day getting something to work (I have windows to contend with).
I use to not like macs, but at school we have G5's, osx10.4. I'm really starting to like em'. - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You could already buy machines with linux preinstalled, i know for a fact that in HP small business did that, and you didn't actually have to run a business.
- brickbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is Awesome. It's not the point who the companies are. The point is that Linux is coming. in 3 years, when you have millions of mainstream computers with linux preinstalled, software vendors and device manufacturers will have to fall into line or it will sting their bottom line.
I ran linux for a year but the printer I bought (Canon) didn't have drivers so I had to switch back. I predict that one day Microsoft will release software for Linux just like OSX.
BTW, I tried them all. Ubuntu ROCKS! - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Support from Dell? HAHA
- blixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This is the first major brand name consumer product with a Linux operating system on it."
Uhh... are you sure about that? I have a Linksys NSLU2 that runs Linux. It's not a Laptop - but it *is* a "consumer product with a Linux operating system on it."
Also - what about the HP NX6110? It is a Laptop/Notebook. HP is a major brand name. And it ships with Ubuntu Linux. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DELL support + hardware + warrant + linux = screw ms windows!
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is lame, they support linux dumbass http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/precn_n?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
- dbrown1981, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Never link to a /. post. Digg the actual article!!!
- fozzcorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Dell are good computers for mom and pop that want to get online to read/send email and play Yahoo/MSN games, and not much else, unless you go to their top gaming systems (which aren't that bad actually)." - Koskun
Based on what? That everyone who buys a laptop wants to have portable games? Some people do actually buy computers for something toher than games... But nope, Koshun says I need a high end system. So that cheap portable system used for office work now is a monster DTR that sucks battery life and I wasted all that money on a video card I didn't need. I love when people say that they would never never never buy a laptop with integrated video and they tell other people not to as well. Why pay the money for a fricken video card to do office work??????????????? - TWiThead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In addition to the routers and HP computer that have been cited, any TiVo DVR qualifies as a "major brand name consumer product with a Linux operating system on it." TiVo's official rollout began on March 31, 1999 (almost 6 ½ years ago).
The submitter misquoted the article, which referred to the Dell Latitude 110L as the "first consumer product with Mandriva," a claim that's limited to this particular Linux distribution. - anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is nice to hear, but i'd rather have them send me a dell with no OS, so i can choose my distro!
- mikataur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is good news.
Mandrake/Mandriva is a good distro for the newcomer to Linux. Not as pro-user as SuSE, not as earnestly idealistic as Ubuntu, not as make-another-buck-for-Michael-Robertson as Linspire, just a good solid, easy to pick up distro.
Go Dell. It's one small step towards pushing away Microsoft's vasoline tube.
Should make the price cheaper too, which after all is why people buy Dell. - suicidal-kid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Even this won't make dell better. They still suck.
- datter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Too bad this doesn't aplpy to the US. Someone needs to do some more reasearch before posting."
... and someone needs to learn how to spell. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"DELL support + hardware + warrant + linux = screw ms windows!"
Have you ever owned a Dell for at least a year? LMAO! Dell is "good" for a OEM product and thats if you set aside building yourself a computer/laptop or go with Falcon or alienware.
